Sarajevo, 1993

What is the real taste of horror? Tens of thousands of people besieged, starved and shelled for four years was a pretty good vantage point for contemplating the very concrete abomination of man. In 1992, the Serbs had invaded Yugoslavia in order to take control of this country that had been, until then, a patchwork of different ethnic groups. They called that operation ethnic purification, and they used some of the well-proven methods: massive slaughters, systematic rapes and torture camps. For months and years, we all knew that some of our neighbours were in hell. For few of us, it was important to act in some way in Bosnia, particularly during the siege of Sarajevo.I went there a first time, not as a photojournalist, but as a concerned citizen, trying to find a way to be involved in the long term, and to do something with the Bosnian people rather than about them. So, we came back to shoot a fictional movie with the people we encountered (see the Elvis Film link below).

Quel est le vrai goût de l'horreur ? Les milliers de gens assiégés, affamés et bombardés pendant quatre ans me donnait un assez bon point de vue sur la très concrète abomination de l'Homme.
